Ongoing Adult Faith Formation

The parish supports ongoing faith growth and fellowship for young adults and adults, with some programs open to those beyond the parish as well. Check the parish bulletin, news blog and calendar for details about current and upcoming activities. Check back for new programs as they become available

Holy Cross's Spirituality Committee presents opportunities to develop a more rich spirital life.

Children's Faith Formation

Faith formation helps youth from pre-kindergaraden through young adult to learn about the Catholic faith, including prayers, Sacraments, and liturgy so that they can grow to live their faith fully as adults. Holy Cross's Faith Formation program includes instruction, fun activities, and service opportunities.

Faith formation classes for children pre-kindergraden to grade 8 are held at the church, 11:30 AM on the second and fourth Sundays from mid-September to May.

Each summer, Holy Cross hosts a Vacation Bible School for youth from ages 3 to 10.

The 2017 VBS will be held June 13-15, 6:30 PM-8:00 PM at Holy Cross. The theme this year: Paul and the Underground Church. Holy Cross VBS is open to all children ages 3-10; they do not have to be members of the parish. Cost is $20 for the first child in the family; $5 each for each additional child in the household.

But wait ... Who wouldn't love a free VBS? As an incentive, there will be an opportunity where the family with the most guests to attend and pay will have their registration fees waived. For example, if the Mouse family brings the Duck family of five, but the Pluto family brings a family of three, then only the Mouse family will have their registration fees waived. Sounds like a plan, right?

Registration is now open for this summer's VBS. Register online at or download and complete this registration form. Scan in and return by email to and pay online at the Holy Cross Online Giving site; indicate that this is for VBS 2017, or deposit payment in an envelope with the completed registration form when attending Mass. You may also send or drop off the registration form and payment at the Holy Cross parish office, 2436 S. Alston Ave., Durham, N.C. Please address to Holy Cross Faith Formation and write VBS 2017 in the memo line on the check.

Preparation for First Reconciliation and First Holy Eucharist is usually done in the second grade. Confirmation preparartion is for older youth, typically in high school, and includes a retreat.

Parents of children in faith formation meet monthly for prayer in the Sanctuary. Check the bulletin and calendar for times and dates.

Youth Ministry

The program for high school students meets at the church on second and fourth Sundays at 11:30 AM from September to mid-May. The youth ministry combines faith formation, Youth Group, and Confirmation preparation along with service, outreach and fun.

Young Adult Ministry

Holy Cross has a very engaged young adult community, for those from ages 18 to 45. Most recently, they held a retreat focused on Franciscan spirituality, and are joining the parish Community Garden project.
