Franciscan Year of Spirituality: “Living the Gospel Life”

Soup 'n Scripture | Wednesdays, 6:30-8:15 pm starting September 14 in the Holy Cross Multipurpose Room. Bring canned or frozen veggies to contribute to the communal pot of soup. While the soup simmers, join the group for reading, reflection and discussion of the coming weekend's scripture readings.

Transitus Service | Monday, October 3, 7 pm in the Holy Cross Worship Space. The devotion and celebration remembers the passing of St. Francis from this life into God. A light reception will follow the service.

Contemplative Hike | Saturday, October 22, 9 am. Hikers will meet at the Cole Mill Road Picnic area for a 1.2-mile hike. There will be stops along the trail to share reflections on excerpts from Pope Francis’s encyclical on the environment, Laudato si: On Care for our Common Home.

Discernment of God's Will in our Everyday Lives | Saturday, December 10, 10 am to 12 noon, Holy Cross Sanctuary. Participants will learn how to fully focus on and recognize God’s voice in their lives and the process of judging whether God is the source of their decision making. Presenter is Br. Casey Cole, OFM, a student Franciscan Friar based at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Durham. He is author of the blog, Breaking in The Habit, and produces videos on YouTube. This session is open to all, with a special invitation to teens and young adults, or anyone discerning God's will in their lives.

Reading Groups, Kickoff Meeting | Monday, January 9, 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, Holy Cross Multipurpose Room. Join us for this reading and discussion program. Our selected book is Simplicity: The Freedom of Letting Go, by Richard Rohr. Fr. Rohr is a Franciscan, prolific writer, and director of the Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This book is a new and revised edition of a collection of sermons and lectures given in Germany during 1990. Fr. Rohr is convinced that the overarching imperative of our time is to link spirituality and social justice. Join us for what will certainly be an engaging reading and discussion series. Invite friends who may be interested in this shared learning and spiritual growth program. At our first meeting, we will introduce the topic, form discussion groups and set our schedule for this shared experience. Need a preview? Here's an excerpt from the book we will be reading.

Overnight Lenten Retreat | Friday, March 24 to Saturday, March 25, Avila Retreat Center. Retreatants are invited to enter into a rich environment of communal silence, meant to enhance the ability to listen more attentively and closely to God’s voice and the movement of the Holy Spirit in their lives.  Specific passages and questions for reflection will provided for quiet prayer periods.

Service Project | Saturday, April 1, 8:30 am, Holy Cross Multipurpose Room.  Follow in the tradition of St. Francis as we go out into the Durham Community and become the church rebuilt and the face of God to our brothers and sisters. Participants will gather at 8:30 for coffee and pastries and then go out into the community to complete service projects. Participants will return to Holy Cross for lunch and reflections.

Presentation, Marian Devotion | Saturday, May 6, 10 am to 12 noon, Holy Cross Worship Space. Join in the celebration of Mary who followed the will of God all her life.

Culminating Celebration | Saturday, June 3, 10 am to 12 noon, Holy Cross Multipurpose Room. Parishioners will share reflections and celebrate the closing of the Year of Spirituality, “Living the Gospel Life”. Refreshments will be served.
